Rebel Groups use Natural Resources to fund Military

The United Nations are trying to help out with the people in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Some people say that the U.N. efforts are irrelevant. The Congolese government has failed to assist the United Nations by disarming the armed rebel Hutu fighters.

Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has 80% of the world's coltan, a mineral used to make cell phones, video games and computers. The DR of Congo has some of the worlds largest deposits of gold, copper, diamonds and coltan. The rebel armies mine and sell these minerals to Uganda and Rwanda. The money is used to purchase weapons and supplies for their troops.
